TIME TO GET OVER TO HICKORY KNOB STATE PARK FOR AN EARLY SEASON XTERRA TRIATHLON! 

For XTERRA veterans, XTERRA Hickory Knob is a great way to kick off your season and grab some early race points. Curious about taking your multisport fitness off road? XTERRA Hickory Knob is a good place to start!

Hickory Knob State Park is located on the shores of Lake Strom Thurmond near McCormick, SC. It is conveniently located about 2.5 hours from Atlanta, 2 hours from Columbia and Greenville, and 3 or so from Charleston and Savannah. The physical address is: Hickory Knob State Park is 1591 Resort Drive, McCormick, SC 29835. 


At 7:30 a.m, triathletes will hit the water for an 800 meter swim in Lake Strom Thurmond. There will be wave starts from the bank...think muddy, red muddy, lakeshore. After the swim, a short run to transition and a little 14.4 mile mountain bike ride... 2 loops of the 7.2 mile Lakeshore Trail. Off the bike at transition for a 5 mile run that takes you up Campground Road to 2 loops of the 1.7 mile Turkey Ridge Loop Trail and back down Campground Road to the finish!


USA TRIATHLON: XTERRA Hickory Knob Triathlon is a USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned race. USAT rules will apply...including rules regarding use of wetsuits. To race, yu'll have to have an annual USAT license or obtain a 1 day license for $12.00. This can be obtained through the registration process but the $12.00 fee is not included in the race registration fee. You can also obtain an annual USAT license through the registration process BUT we ask that you don't. If you wish to obtain an annual USAT license, please do so throguh the USAT website  www.usatriathlon.org. You will also find rules and regulations at the USAT web site as well....and you, as a racing triathlete, are responsible for knowing them!


THE SWIM: The swim is 800 meters though we reserve the right to modify it should water or weather conditions so warrant! We expect the water temperatures to be mid 60F soooooo......wetsuits will be allowed....unless global warming REALLY kicks in be race date...


THE BIKE: The bike course is 14.4 miles. There is a very short spur trail that takes you from transition to the Lakeview Trail. You will do 2 loops of the Lakeview Trail before returning to transition via the spur trail. Lakeview is a rolling trail with ruts and rocks and roots. It has it's share of single track but there are areas where passing can (and will) occur. We d ask that those of you who may ride a little slower than others please don't block the trail and allow others to pass when it is safe for you to do so. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: IF there has been significant rainfall in the area in the days leading up to the race OR rain within 36 hours of the race so that the trail is wet, the bike portion of the race will have to be done on the roadways in the park. This is necessary to try to maintain the integrity of the trails and is a part of the agreement that allows use of the park! THE RUN: From transition, you'll run up Campground Road (which is tar and gravel), turn right on Resort Road (you'll be on it about 100 yards) to the Turkey Ridge Loop Trail. Turkey Ridge is 1.7 miles...you'll do it twice...and then run the 100 yards up Resort, turn left, then back down Campground to finish!  (Yes, a downhill finish....!) RELAY:Relay teams of 2 or 3 are allowed. You can race all ladies, all men, or co-ed!


Packet Pick Up/Late Registration: At present, we are planning Saturday, April 5, 2014  from 4:00-6:30 pm at the Long Cane Convention Center (approximately 1.5 miles from Hickory Knob State Park entrance) and race morning from 6:30 - 7:15 amWe will not mail packets that are not picked up. Please don't ask...especially a couple of months later....

Transition Area: The transition area WILL NOT be open before 6:30 am on race morning! Please don't come any earlier or we'll put you to work! Only those racing are allowed in transition! You may not remove bikes from transition untill all cyclist are in and out on the run course!

Aid StationsAid will be available during the run only: water, Gatorade and Powergels. There is no bottle hand up for the bike portion though we will have a self serve aid station on the bike course. 

Hoodies: The first 50 registered for the triathlon will receive hoodies. If not one of the first, you can purchase a hoodie during the registration process. After the first 50 have registered, an e-mail will be sent advising that they've received the hoodies and we'll modify the web site to refelect such!

Shirts: Guaranteed to all registered by March 21, 2014. After that date, we cant guarantee size or quantity.

Awards: Finisher's awards to all completing  the triathlon. Special awards to all completing a trail race (25K and up) and the triathlon. Overall awards (medals/trophies/plaques) for first three Female & Male, first Masters Male & Female, first Grandmasters Male & Female, top 3 in each 5 year increment age group beginning 14 & under, 15-19, 20-24....70-74+.  Top 2 relay teams. 

Post Race: Awards will be given out as soon as results are tallied. There will be post race food and drinks so hang around. Awards will not be mailed unless arrangements are otherwise made.

Accommodations: Hickory Knob has some cabins and campsites available for the race at somewhat reduced prices. Call 864-391-2450 to reserve a spot. Be sure to mention that you are coming in for the trail run/triathlon weekend. (Note: Jan Danner is the office manager should you run into any problems.)

‚ÄčTRAIL RACES

The XTERRA Hickory Knob Trail Races go off at 7:30 am on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The first race is a 5K (3.4 Miles) on the Turkey Ridge Loop. After it is completed, we offer: 12K (7.2 mi), 25K (14.4 miles--Heavy 1/2), 42K (26.7 mi--Marathon+) and a 50K. You can run the 5K plus one of the others. This is a great way to preview the tri course. If you register for both a trail run (or 2) and the tri, you'll receive discounted rates over registering for them separately. Those doing a double (25K or longer) plus the triathlon receive a finisher's award. You can register for the trail + tri at the active.com registration page. XTERRA MYRTLE BEACH

RACE THE HULK!

On Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4, come be a part of the newest XTERRA addition to South Carolina, XTERRA Myrtle Beach!

On Saturday, race the 20K or 50K trail runs. On Sunday, race the XTERRA Myrtle Beach Triathlon. The Saturday trail runs and Sunday mountain bike take place on THE HULK, a 6.2 mile rolling, rambling trail at the Horry County Bike & Run Park. We are offering a great combination of events between Hickory Knob and Myrtle Beach. You can run both trail runs and race both triathlons or both triathlons and earn special recognition. You'll also save money by registering for a combination of events as opposed to registering separately. These are GREAT opportunities to test your level of endurance! Don't miss out!
